Description

The Grounds Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing routine and specialized tasks to ensure the upkeep, safety, and aesthetic quality of Stillman College’s campus grounds. This role includes general landscaping duties as well as assisting with construction and facilities repair projects as needed. The position requires hands-on experience with a variety of grounds equipment and machinery, including snowplows, skid steers, and backhoes/excavators. As a member of the Campus Facilities Department, the technician also plays a supporting role in promoting campus-wide safety and maintenance standards.

Job Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • The Grounds Maintenance Technician may be expected to perform any or all of the following essential functions:
  • Operate and maintain groundskeeping equipment, including tractors, trucks, mowers, dump trucks, man lifts, and skid loaders with attachments.
  • Perform routine landscaping tasks such as mowing, trimming, edging, pruning, watering, fertilizing, and planting.
  • Conduct seasonal maintenance activities, including snow and ice removal, salting of walkways and parking lots, and leaf collection.
  • Assist in campus beautification projects, including landscape design, brick and block placement, concrete repairs, and drainage installation.
  • Haul trailers and transport landscaping materials as needed.
  • Operate power tools and equipment such as chainsaws, overhead saws, and grinders.
  • Support maintenance of tools and machinery, including minor repairs, welding, fabrication, and painting of equipment.
  • Aid in parking lot striping and traffic signage maintenance.
  • Participate in construction and facilities repair projects under direction.
  • Perform general clean-up of campus grounds, including the collection and disposal of debris.
  • Monitor and report hazardous conditions to appropriate personnel.
  • Assist other Campus Facilities staff with various duties and special projects.
  • Participate in project planning and execution as directed.
  • Adhere to OSHA and college safety protocols and complete all required safety training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the College’s mission and operations.

 

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge:

  • Proficient in the safe operation of motorized groundskeeping equipment, including snowplows, skid steers, and backhoes/excavators.
  • Understanding of occupational hazards and safety practices related to grounds maintenance and equipment operation.
  • Knowledge of building and grounds maintenance procedures, construction materials, and landscaping techniques.

 

Skills:

  • Skilled in operating and maintaining a variety of landscaping and heavy equipment.
  • Mechanical aptitude for tool maintenance and equipment repair.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Basic literacy and comprehension skills to follow written instructions and interpret simple diagrams.

 

Abilities:

  • Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions accurately.
  • Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Read and interpret simple technical drawings or schematics.
  • Physically capable of performing duties that require climbing, lifting, bending, walking long distances, and working in various weather conditions.
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
  • Perform tasks involving physical labor, including stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling, reaching, and repetitive motions.

 

Work Schedule (a full-time, 12-month in-person position)

Monday - Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm (possible variations, such as occasional evening or weekend work depending on the organizational events)
