The Stillman College Police Department is seeking a skilled and dedicated Police Sergeant to join our team. This position involves supervising and leading officers to ensure the safety and security of the campus community. The Sergeant will play a key role in enforcing campus policies and maintaining law and order. In the absence of the Chief of Police, the Sergeant will assume the duties of the Chief, providing leadership and guidance to the department.

Job Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities: 

● Supervise, mentor, and manage police officers, ensuring that law enforcement practices, policies, and procedures are followed. 

● Lead and coordinate officers’ daily activities, ensuring professional, effective service to the campus community. 

● Respond to emergencies, criminal incidents, and other campus safety concerns, providing guidance and ensuring appropriate response protocols are followed. 

● Handle investigations and evidence collection for incidents or crimes that occur on campus. 

● Prepare accurate, detailed reports and case files in compliance with departmental and legal standards. 

● Participate in the preparation of the Clery Report, ensuring all federally required crime statistics and campus safety information are compiled, verified, and submitted accurately and on time. 

● Provide ongoing training to officers on crime prevention, response procedures, and de-escalation techniques. 

● Foster and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and local law enforcement agencies. 

● Demonstrate a strong ability and desire to engage with students and actively encourage officers to build positive, approachable relationships with the student body. 

● Evaluate officer performance and provide coaching, corrective action, or recommendations for advancement as appropriate. 

● Assume the responsibilities of the Chief of Police in their absence, ensuring uninterrupted command of the department. 

● Collaborate with college leadership and departments to improve campus-wide safety and emergency preparedness. 

● Perform patrol duties and respond to calls as needed. 

● Attend department meetings and participate in required training and professional development. 

Qualifications: 

● Minimum of 5 years of experience in law enforcement. 

● Minimum of 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role within a law enforcement agency. 

● Certified law enforcement officer with a valid Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training (APOST) certification or eligible for immediate reciprocity. 

● Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field preferred. 

● Strong working knowledge of police operations, community-oriented policing, and applicable laws and procedures. 

● Excellent communication, leadership, and decision-making skills. 

● Demonstrated commitment to campus engagement and community-building. 

● Willingness and ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and in emergency situations. 

● Must be capable of assuming full supervisory duties, including acting as Chief of Police in their absence. 

Physical Requirements: 

● Must pass a physical fitness and agility test as required. 

● Must be able to perform job duties involving extended periods of walking, standing, or sitting, and lift/carry equipment when necessary.
